Nobody is suggesting that gay couples cannot walk in and purchase a cake that's on display and available to anybody else. What they are suggesting is that cake makers should not be required to participate in a gay wedding (i.e. create a custom cake and deliver it to the wedding) if that's their wish. As a wedding vendor myself, I think that's pretty stupid ... but it's also a personal choice IMO.

Likewise, a restaurant has the right, IMO, not to host a specific event or group if they don't want to. If the Nazi Party of Virginia comes to me and says they want to do a private group spin class, I'm going to tell them to go fuck themselves.
